About 15 years ago, dual-purpose rural hybrid chicks were successfully introduced to the market and are now very well-liked by farmers in rural areas. They have an edge over other breeds because of their attributes, which include a variety of colors, faster development rates than native breeds, rounder conformation, disease resistance, tastier meat, and a greater capacity for egg production.
They have an outstanding performance in free-range environments with males reaching maturity at 8–10 weeks and weighing 1.6–1.8 kg live weight. Females beginning egg production at 21 weeks is sufficient to meet the needs of households for eggs and meat.
The most popular breeds in the East African market include Kenbro, Sasso, Kuroiler, Rainbow Rooster, and the Kari improved Kienyeji birds, which are raised and sold by reputable producers.
