The third of the Panch Prayags is Karnaprayag at the confluence of the rivers Alakananda and Pindar, 31 kms. from Rudraprayag. Karna from the Hindu mythological epic Mahabharata is said to have propitiated the Sun God to acquire an impregnable shield, which made him a formidable warrior in the battlefield. Swami Vivekananda meditated here for eighteen days.
The sacred Uma Devi Temple in Karnaprayag is dedicated to Goddess Parvati or Gauri, the daughter of the Himalayas. It is here that her ‘Swayambhu’ or self- manifested idol has been consecrated since ages. This pious Hindu shrine is located near the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar River, making the aura spiritually awakening.
