35–40 mm is the wingspan and adults have a light brown skin. The 1 to 2 12 cm long caterpillars range in color from bright to dark violet to pinkish white.
At the vegetative crop stage, the caterpillars feed in the leaf hearts (leaf funnels). Hearts of yellowed and withering leaves are evidence of the damage. Grain are also tunneled into by stalk borers.
The plant's growth tips are destroyed by the caterpillar feeding and additionally, caterpillars bring Fusarium fungus, which can cause mycotoxins, to the cobs. Insufficient management of stalk borers results in a 20–100% reduction in maize production.
