In tropical and subtropical places, Caesalpinia decapetala is considered a weed of forest edges, disturbed woods, wetter bushland areas, riparian zones (banks of watercourses), pastures, disturbed sites, wildlife, old gardens, roadsides, and plantation crops.

Caesalpinia decapetala is a large, sprawling shrub that can reach a height of 7 meters. It has recurved prickles on its branches and forms dense thickets. It can also climb up into the canopy of larger trees (up to 20 m high).

The juvenile branches contain several sharp, recurved thorns and are densely covered in tiny brownish or golden hairs. Older stems are thicker, a darker shade of greyish-brown, and have more thorns.
