With more than 550 species, Oxalis is a sizable genus of flowering plants in the family Oxalidaceae, which includes wood sorrels. With the exception of the polar regions, the genus is found almost everywhere on earth. Tropical Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa have some of the most diverse species.
Since several of the species have an acidic flavor resembling the sorrel proper (Rumex acetosa), which is only distantly related, they are referred regarded as wood sorrels (often spelt "woodsorrels" or "wood-sorrels").
Instead, some species are known as pink sorrels or yellow sorrels based on the hue of their blossoms. Other species go by the names false shamrocks and sourgrasses in common usage. The term "oxalises" is also used to refer to the entire genus.
