How to protect my phone from malware?

Is there anything I can do to protect my phone from viruses etc? I read a lot of emails and browse the net a lot on it.

An antivirus is the best thing in terms of protection. AVG offers a free version for Android which can be found here.

In my country, most of smarphones purchased from a major provider come with antivirus preinstalled for 6 months

If you are safety, you keep it or erase it, although I heard about a reduced number of case related to deletion, it`s an useful tool
