Does rooting a device cause the device malfunction?

Rooting a device provides super user permission but i have heard in many places that it damages the phone.It is heard that this action decreases the phone's immunity against damage.Is it true?

Rooting may harm your device, if rooting gone wrong then the device can be reboot time to time and it is a method from which we can change our device like updating software  of latest version.
