What is the importance of android technology and Ios? why is different?

For a long time I have wondered what was the reason to create 2 systems and not focus on 1 alone, this would be less competitive but more progressive, then, what is the importance of having these 2 platforms so different?

Basically, people want different things in life; some people like a more private life even with their device and that is why they chose ios while others wants the liberty to share everything and so they chose android. again, their is a difference in the internet browsing: ios makes use of mobile safari along with other browsers and android makes use of Google chrome browsers.
