You can literally separate GPS to Satellite navigation via a Garmin device and a Smartphone, GPS app like Waze plus and its HSDPA, 4G network.
The benefit of a Garmin device is straight up and with no strings attached, it works with satellite communication, period. While an app like Waze is dependent on its cell phone service and or wifi service, Garmin is native in that as long as you have a clear view to the sky it will always take you wherever you want to go. Not the case with cell phone based GPSs which are network service dependent to transmit data back and forth to a satellite via its cell phone towers and service hubs.
