Google Maps is excellent, with most of the functionality you could ever need from a navigation app. Apple Maps is also very good, featuring on iOS devices. Here is a list of very good alternatives:

Waze - allows you to build a profile and a reputation, connecting with other users in a kind of social network

Scout

MapFactor: GPS Navigation - downloads maps to your memory card, so you can still the navigation while offline

Navigate 6 - includes Wikipedia entries on the map, for additional information

Polaris Navigation GPS - accesses maps from other services, to give you a wider selection of maps in each journey

Google Maps comes in the first place with its free robust location database and smooth interface. Scout by telenav: a free alternative for standalone GPS devices. Waze: for car commuters, it offers accurate and up to date traffic alerts. All of these are for Android. And for iPhone, there is: Apple Maps.

For me WAZE is a must have for any smartphone owner. Because it is free. ;-) No gimmicks, no Premium version, no ads. Free. It is also traffic information, And also free, can arguably be the best available for you, depending on where you live and what options you have. Traffic information is free because it is crowdsourced from its users, so the more you use it, the more locals benefit. So the more users, the better its local information about traffic conditions become. In non-dveloped countries, where traffic information is scarse or non-existant, Waze is the only option. Last because it has incorporated social features, so you discover when friends are close by, or even crossing your route. Cool! :-)
