A huge genus of army ants called Dorylus, commonly referred to as driven ants, safari ants, or siafu, is mostly found in central and east Africa, though it can also be found in southern Africa and tropical Asia.
The word "siafu" is a loanword from Swahili and is one of many comparable terms used by local Bantu speakers to describe different species of these ants.
Members of this genus construct brief subterranean bivouacs in cavities they excavate and live in, either for a few days or up to three months, unlike the New World members of the previous subfamily Ecitoninae (now Dorylinae).
