Dianella tasmanica is a strappy herbaceous plant that can reach heights and widths of 0.5–2 meters (1–7 feet) and is known for its thick, underground spreading rhizome.

The green, linear, keeled leaves can grow up to 1 meter (40 in) in length and 1-4 cm in width. Their margins are coarsely serrated.

During the spring and summer (August to February), tiny blue flowers with a diameter of 1.5 cm bloom, which are followed by small, approximately oval or globular violet berries with a diameter of 1.2 cm (0.5 in).
