Banana cultivars that are part of the Cavendish subgroup of the AAA banana cultivar group produce Cavendish bananas as its fruit. The plants that produce bananas are referred to by the same term.

They contain significant commercial cultivars like "Dwarf Cavendish" (1888) and "Grand Nain," among others (the "Chiquita banana"). These cultivars have had the largest worldwide traffic in bananas since the 1950s. After it was decimated by Panama disease, they switched to the Gros Michel banana, also known as the Bogoya in Uganda and the Kampala banana in Kenya.

They are spread through identical clones since they are unable to reproduce sexually. The Cavendish banana has extremely little genetic variation as a result. The Cavendish is extremely vulnerable to disease, fungal outbreaks, and genetic mutation because it is planted in dense chunks in a monoculture with no other natural species to act as a buffer. This could eventually cause the Cavendish to go extinct in the commercial market.
