The woolly nightshade is a multi-branched shrub or small tree that can grow up to 4 meters (13 feet) tall under the correct circumstances. The plant can live up to thirty years and has a potent odor.

The huge, simple, ovate-elliptical leaves are grey-green in color and up to 40 centimeters long and 30 cm wide. The leaf has a sharp tip and a wedge-shaped base. Their petioles range in length from 3 to 9 cm.

They have long-stemmed, star-shaped, hairy yellowish, tomentose, thick trichomes.

The 15 centimeter long inflorescence axis support cymes of purple solitary flowers with a yellow centers in the faintly perfumed inflorescences.
