if you’re new to broadband, your provider will need to set up your phone line before you can get online. This usually takes a week, and shouldn’t affect calls.

You’ll get a broadband modem, which allows your computer to use the signal, and a couple of “microfilters” which help your modem get a cleaner signal through the line. These make quite a difference (you may even get no access without them), so it’s important to use them wherever possible.

Of course, all this equipment costs the service provider money, so most will lock you into a minimum 12-month contract to recoup costs.

hmmm… here in the philippines a company called PLDT is the market leader for broadband service but it doesn’t take so long to set it up once you avail it.  it is functional after getting the modem and setting it up in your home or office in less than an hour.

Broadband normally implies not over the phone cable, this is usually ADSL or ADSL+ which still runs over the phone system, broadband again normally has a dedicated digital line service similar or a pre-cursur to things like fiber optics (slower)

In terms of costs it of course does depend on your budget but anyone with a little IT savvy can look around and find a decent modem which supports PPOE, PPTP etc etc the problem usually comes in with line testing as the agents will for the most part not touch a none windows system and/or none modem that they have not installed.

A good modem shouldn’t set you back more than $100 with a good router with at least the n signal band and router combined perhaps $150-200 depends on what you want, what you need and how you plan to use it – one thing I learned from using blueyonder is getting your own tech has it’s benefits no midnight update pushes to the modem which keep you offline all night ARGH!
