Are smart phones commonly available in Nicaragua?  How much do they cost?  Is there support for them?   How reliable are they?

Smart phones are VERY popular in Nicaragua. They sell them at Claro and Movistar stores as well as any other electronic store, which there are tons of. I believe $40 will get you a smart phone that is not super smart. They are reliable and repairs readily available. I just find smart phones to smart for my liking.

I had terrible experiences with smartphone less than $100, which are usually no name, so I prefer to spend my money on something with a generally appreciated brand, such as Samsung, HTC or Sony

Despite my personal opinion, indeed those affordable smartphones are a comforable solution for those who are searching for a gadget to start it, to play, to browse a little bit on the internet, but if you ask more of it like clear photos, you will be disappointed

Costin in correct. The cheap phones are cheap. Do not expect the same quality, especially with photos as you would get with a more expensive smart phone. Do also keep in mind how important that aspect is, as many phones accidentally walk away, fall in the water or are otherwise lost or damaged. So, think about your investment vs. loss numbers before making a decision.
