I live in Nicaragua but will be visiting the States for ten days. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a temporary use cell phone? I do not need internet, just phone service to contact local friends in the areas. I am also not interested in international calling. I think you can buy a phone and put time on it like you do here, but does anyone know how that works and what the general cost may be?

Amazon Prime has one for 4.99 with free shipping or one for 10.99 with 5.99 shipping.  Just google burner phone and try not to feel like a drug dealer.

Thank you for the laughs and advise. I do believe I will not tell my friends and family that I purchased a “burner” phone….they may think I have found some bad influences in Central America. I wonder if the DEA follows these purchases and I will end up on a watch list when traveling between Central America and the States. Do these “burner” phones come with time on them or how would one put time on it? I don’t think they have pulperias there that charge time to phones like they do here in Nicaragua.

Most decent phones come with some minutes and a plan to deduct from your credit card or bank account if you want to buy more minutes.  Of course every phone will have its own plan so you can choose the one that best fits your needs.  The nicer name is a prepaid phone if “burner” has bad connotations.Embarassed

Thank you for the advice. If I don’t have a credit card is there anywhere I can pay in cash for minutes? I am still wondering what my family and the DEA will think of this purchase, but maybe it will make me more edgy and cool in their eyes?? Or maybe it will get me stopped at Customs? I will look into this option. Thank you.

Learned that you need to keep the receipt if you buy a phone card for a “burner phone”…you can’t use the cards without the numbers on the receipt. Learned this the hard way.
