Tracphone is a prepaid phone service. Typically you buy a certain amount of minutes on a card and you add it to your cell phone that you buy for their service. I would say that this service is for a very light cell phone user that makes occasional short calls while they’re out on errands or something of that sort. This service is definitely not for someone seeking unlimited minutes or high talking volume, otherwise you’re going to ramp up the cost more than a monthly plan with another provider.

In my experience, I’ve not had too many issues with using the service, but when you do have issues, they’re difficult to work out. Their customer service is very limited and you’re often talking with someone in Mexico. If you’re looking for a budget cell service provider and you plan to use it sparingly, this can save you some money.

I have always been very happy with Tracfone – mainly because their coverage is amazing! They rent out every one else’s transmitters so there are very few dead zones.

You’re right about the pre-paid plans ending up more expensive if you’re a heavy user, but they now also have monthly non-contract plans that I haven’t looked into yet. It’s possible they may end up giving the big ‘dogs’ a run for the money.

I continue to use Tracphone for one of my phones, and Straight Talk for the other.

I like Tracphone…I don’t use a “smart phone” for that one, just a regular old phone I keep for emergencies.
