Qualcomm has opted to kill of it’s recently announced 802 processor chip, the chip was shown at CES 2014 and less than a month later the qualcomm has confirmed it’s killing it off citing low demand for the SoC.

The chip itself was interesting as it was designed to power televisions much like a smart phone however the big players we’re not interested and the 802 is now officially dead.

its more of an indication of the way the engineers assume what consumers want, in this case given the SoC itself was directly marketed to smart TV’s it implies that smart televisions are not something that consumers are pushing for i.e nobody ordered the chipset to push into their televisions so it indicates a lack of consumer demand.

The current televisions are not really all that smart, they are in basic terms modems the smart aspects are yet to come, this is what LG will likely tackle first allowing applications to be installed on their version of WebOS etc etc granted their are TVs with apps but not app stores.. thats what truely makes a smart tv the chip would hve helped but televisions are hardly a big profit making part of tech – ask sony they have been losing billions for years.
