Well i guess you cannot use other applications simultaneously without closing first or currently using app on phone as there is no minimizing option on any of the phones available.

Tall you need to do is just close them. For example For an iPad you need to double click the home button on the side of your iPad. And then swipe up the apps that you want to stop running.
